The term cradle to grave was first told to me by one of the owners of a brokerage I worked for in the mid-2000s. This was when Yahoo was the search engine of choice, so I Yahoo'd it and found nothing. I sat and stared at my computer screen for a few hours, then just bit the bullet and called "Mitch" back.

"Hey, Mitch. (stuttering) earlier today you called and said that if I continue on this path of cradle to grave, I most likely will burn out. What does cradle to grave mean?"

That day, I swallowed my pride and just asked what I needed to know to ensure, that I didn't burn out. It is something my husband had said, since the first few weeks of meeting me, "Millisa you have a teachable spirit".

Recently, life threw curveballs at me, and I reverted back to those simpler days when my business could have ballooned or regressed. Today, I am happily on the other side of it.

5 Tips on Navigating Beyond Cradle to Grave

By Millisa Nwokolo

Map out your office. Sit down with a stack of sticky notes and an open large surface and write out your office's daily operation from beginning to end.

Cradle to Grave chart. With a red or colored pen. Star the things you enjoy and love to do. Put $$ on the things that bring in profits.

Take out the trash. Get a fresh pair of eyes on your processes, so they can help you see beyond the grave. Start with the familiar work and stay with it, if you have to get up and take a lap around the house or eat some chocolate and sit back down. I play some really upbeat music in the background to keep me motivated.

Prioritize "Beyond the Grave". Decide your budget and then start to prioritize your to-do list to automate with technology or hire a virtual assistant to help move the mundane things off your plate, so that your business can focus on the sales. Make that list!

Stick with your routine. You must set a deadline and stick to it, sit at your desk and keep going till you get a plan of action that allows for growth. Ensure your list has a step-by-step plan of action, so you can move to the next job as soon as you have finished with the last.
